The Tea Ceremony holds significant value in Early Childhood Education, teaching children essential values such as gratitude, respect, and love by serving tea and snacks to others. Additionally, this activity fosters critical social skills, including communication, cooperation, and proper etiquette in serving and consuming tea and snacks.
A Warm Welcome and Rituals
From May 13 to 17, 2024, aligned with each Kindergarten 2 class’s schedule, parents were invited to join their children in a unique and culturally enriching event. The event began with a warm welcome as parents held their children’s hands, lining up outside the classroom for the handwashing ritual. As each pair approached the washing station, they took turns washing their hands while reciting the handwashing chant, emphasizing cleanliness and mindfulness.
Meditation and Instruction
Once inside the classroom, students guided their parents to their cushions, where soothing music played to create a serene atmosphere for meditation. This session allowed parents and children to center themselves and prepare for the ceremony. Following the meditation, Shigu briefed the parents on what the students had learned during their Tea Ceremony classes, highlighting the skills and values they had acquired.
The Tea Ceremony
The main event of the gathering was the tea ceremony itself. Selected students were assigned the important task of serving trays containing a cup of tea or snacks. Parents were also invited to participate actively, serving tea or snacks to their fellow parents. As they drank their tea, parents and children recited the Three Goods of the Tea Ceremony: “Think Good Thoughts,” “Say Good Words,” and “Do Good Deeds.” This recitation beautifully reminded everyone of the ceremony’s underlying values and intentions. Following this, they enjoyed their tea and snacks. After finishing their snacks, another group of students and parents returned the trays to the table.
Sharing and Reflection
The gathering then moved to a reflective phase where parents watched a video showcasing their children’s activities during the tea ceremony classes. This visual recap offered a glimpse into the student’s learning journey and their growth throughout the classes. Before the event concluded, some parents shared their thoughts and impressions about the activity. Their feedback highlighted the significance of the experience, with many expressing appreciation for the opportunity to connect with their children in a meaningful way.
This activity allows students to showcase their skills while enabling parents to witness their educational growth and apply these values at home. It provides a platform for parents and children to bond over a shared cultural practice, promotes mindfulness and positive behavior, and allows parents to witness and participate in their children’s learning experiences.
A heartfelt thank you to all K2 students, parents, and teachers for making this day unforgettable. Your participation and enthusiasm ensured the success of this meaningful event, leaving lasting memories for all.
