Master Cheng Yen said, “To give is better than to receive.”  Last Thursday, on February 6, 2020, our school welcomed the visit of Kinokuniya Bookstores Indonesia and Ms Umi As’adah, librarian of Sekolah Cinta Kasih Cengkareng for a book donation ceremony from Kinokuniya Bookstores to Tzu Chi’s education missions.

Kinokuniya Bookstores Indonesia’s General Manager, Yanti Hanafiah said, “I want our kids to love books, so that they become less addicted to their mobiles.”

The bookstore generously donated 1,885 books written in Chinese languages, in order to assist students’ Chinese language education and to encourage them to become more interested in learning Chinese. “We all know Chinese is the second most spoken language and it will soon become bigger, so learning Chinese is necessary,” she added.

Kinokuniya Bookstores holds many activities to support children’s literacy, one of which is holding story telling competitions to motivate children to read more and motivate them to speak publicly to increase their confidence.

For both Tzu Chi School PIK and Sekolah Cinta Kasih Cengkareng, as a school with a trilingual system, it is a common case for us to send out our students for Mandarin story telling competition out of school.

Tzu Chi Secondary students have joined and won many Chinese competition, one of which include storytelling competition. Ms Wan Yan Lin, Head of Chinese Language department at Tzu Chi Secondary School, is thankful for these donation, “These books will enrich our teaching resources and provide more learning resources for students”.

Most of the books are comics or picture books, with the hope to make it more interesting for students. Ms Wan said, “The books with pictures which will attract students, there is also the possibility for teachers to take students to the library and read the books freely,” summed Ms Wan.

Similar to Ms Wan, Ms Umi As’adah from Sekolah Cinta Kasih also agrees at the need of various story books to encourage students to read more, “First of all, for story telling competition, you definitely need more sources. Also with colorful and picture story books, students can read Chinese books as a source of ‘entertainment’ rather than just learning activity.”

Kinokuniya bookstores donated 1,885 story books and other reading materials written in Chinese language, in the hope of increasing students' Mandarin literacy, as well as encouraging students to actually enjoy reading Mandarin texts rather than just reading class materials
