  Career week 2019

The time is getting closer for our Grade 12 to enter university, some universities even have started to accept students’ applications. Therefore, to assist our Grade 12 students in choosing the best path for their higher education, Tzu Chi Secondary School Counselling Department organized a Career Week from October 7 to 11, 2019.

The highlight of this Career Week was a career talk held at the Xi Yi Ting hall on October 11, 2019. In this career talk, Tzu Chi School welcomed three professionals to share their stories and experience to help our students in deciding for their future, namely, Mr Andreas Sagita, Associate Director at Deloitte; Mr Billy Lanajaya, Director of PT Inti Makmur Internasional; and Dr Mia Gracia, a Dentist and Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist. The career talk was moderated by Tzu Chi Secondary Counsellor, Mr Yosehan.

A common challenge for our students is the pressure of choosing the right major from the start. “It is normal to get confused, I did too. I even took two tests, one to study psychology and one to study dentistry. But I have decided to study at certain universities so when I didn’t pass the test to study psychology, and was accepted to study dentistry, I felt like it was a sign for me to pursue my journey in becoming a dentist,” said Dr Gracia.

Mr Sagita also said, “In Indonesia, we don’t have Digital Forensic as a major here. But, if you want to work in a similar field like mine, the question we normally ask our candidates is, are you interested in computer engineering? For example, if you play computer games, do you just play or are you at all curious on the games work? Your interest and skills matter.”

Finding one’s passion or hobby will be a great start, not only it brings a joyful experience during your work, but it could create a profession that you might never think of before. “I didn’t know my kind of job exist. Even a college friend of mine who was in IT is now pursuing a career as a music composer,” Mr Sagita added.

Mr Lanajaya is a director of a multi company. Last year, his production house produced the movie ‘A Man Called Ahok’. He wasn’t born with a silver spoon, but he knew since he was young that one day he’d become a businessman. “I chose international relations as a major, but before I entered university I looked into what these majors could offer. I don’t want to learn about politics or law, but international relations at my campus offered international trade programme, which provided me with the communication skills needed for business.”

Mr Lanajaya also highlighted the importance of building your network during university, “It’s not about getting the knowledge, but moreover, building the network. You never know, inside 10-15 years, your classmate could become a governor or will be successful in other fields, which can also benefit your business.”

Both Mr Sagita and Dr Gracia also emphasised on the importance of ‘knowing what you like’. “Know what you like, persevere, and make something out of it. Look at Warung Upnormal, they mostly offer instant noodles yet, now we see them everywhere,” said Mr Sagita.

Aside from the career talk, in this Career Week, we also received a number of universities from Indonesia and overseas, namely BINUS, Universitas Pelita Harapan, London School of Public Relations, as well as education representatives from Canada, France, Spain, and Germany to assist our Grades 10, 11, and 12 students in planning their final school years.
